Chasing Ghosts A Supernatural Thriller Judah Black Novels Book 3 edition by EA Copen Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
If Guilty by Association and Blood Debt, the first two novels in E.A. Copen's Judah Black series, were worldbuilding affairs, the third book -- Chasing Ghosts -- puts all the puzzle pieces together in an emotionally fraught, highly intense adventure that wraps up the initial arc and sets up what promises to be an exciting future.Everything that made Guilty and Blood fantastic novels is back for Chasing Ghosts; Copen is clearly growing and maturing as a storyteller, and she's fine-tuned each of the characters' voices. Judah is quintessentially herself, but she is so much more, as she progresses both on her own and with regards to several of the relationships she keeps.
Chasing Ghosts is, fair warning, an emotional gut punch. There are at least three occasions where this book practically moved me to tears, and there's something viscerally satisfying about that. Yes, we often read to escape, but we also read to feel. Copen gets us to feel for several of the key players in this tale, while simultaneously taking us on a journey that twists and turns far more than I had anticipated.
The depth Copen has given not just Judah, but several of the other important characters, really helps flesh out Paint Rock -- a world that, on its own, doesn't really amount to much. Paint Rock makes Sunnydale seem like a bustling metropolis, but the reservation's inhabitants more than make up for the lack of scenery.
I'm excited to see where this series goes from here, even though Chasing Ghosts would make a fitting end to a trilogy. Judah Black is one of my favorite characters, and Copen has established herself as one of my favorite independently-published authors. If TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Supernatural tickle your fancy, then this is a series you should be reading.
And if not? Hell, read it anyway. Cause it's really, really good.

Chasing Ghosts A Supernatural Thriller Judah Black Novels Book 3 edition by EA Copen Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This book begins about 4 hours after Blood Debt ends. Judah doesn't even get to celebrate a political victory when she has to begin dealing with the Vampire who's the mover and shaker of vampires in America - not that he's developing his own clan. This head honcho has a soft spot for a little girl, whose mother is a Wendigo we thought was destroyed in Guilty by Association. This little girl is falling ill and no one can solve the problem. Judah discovers what's attacking the little girl and she would die to solve the case....well, she does, actually. Meanwhile, the war being waged on Supernaturals by a human hate groups kills and injures close to home. Her boyfriend, a werewolf - hard to meet men in Paint Rock - gets involved with the hate groups in dangerous ways. It isn't long before Judah's world turns upside down even before she takes out the killer.
This Judah Black novel is one of those books you don't want to set down. Prepare to feel your heartstrings jerked on throughout this book.
In Chasing Ghosts, Copen returns the reader to their unanswered questions from book one. Judah finds herself tossed into several frays all at once and a series of moral conflicts where she's not sure what to do.
This book isn't just about finding the monster. It also makes you question your definition of monster. The tense political setting of her world in this book is something everyone can relate to.
You also get some romance in Chasing Ghosts. I like that it's a realistic relationship where both parties are trying to awkwardly figure out how their relationship will work because both come from different worlds and have histories.
I really can't wait to see how the set-up future problems are taken care of and how some of the unresolved background issues play out.
If you aren't reading Judah Black yet, you should be! This is an author to watch!
After reading the first book, a freebie, Guilty by association, I bought the next two. I really enjoy this series.
We met the woman called Judah Black, her real name is still a secret, in the first book.
She lives in an American world with magick (sic) and wields some herself. In this book, she is getting emotionally closer to a werewolf, Sal, who is helping her with her son, Hunter. She has kept Hunter's werewolf state a secret from her employers, a federal agency, as she is a widow and since she is human the agency would separate her and the child.
In this book she is threatened with Hunter being exposed to the authorities in order for her to find a cure for a toddler being ravaged by a mysterious condition. We were at the birth of this child in the first book, so time has passed, and teenager Hunter may soon face his first change into a wolf.
I would recommend reading the first book in the series before this one, in order partly to set the scene, Though, to be truthful, the important points are mentioned, so you would not lose more than the flavour of the development of the various characters. But. That is part of the joy of this series, you meet and get to know a bit more about the characters each time. This is an interesting world that is gradually being revealed to us readers Those of us who do not like graphic sex can also enjoy the story. There are battles, though, and people do get hurt, and some die.
I like a good flow when reading, and mostly the music, the flow, the rhythm, the wording, carries me happily along, but every now and then a jarring note like a screeching violin causes me to shudder .
The story is told in first person, and this author or editor, seems to be afraid of the words 'him and me.'
If I am mean and extrapolate, to be consistent, E A Copen would write 'between they and I. '
The actual wording used is 'between he and I'. This fear of 'me' is seen several times, like in 'he and I, ' where in an internal monologue it would be 'him and me.' This is more jarring than seeing principal for principle, as the sound is the same.
