Review:
It is hard to represent the horrors of war as well as Phillip Richard has done while still writing a gripping novel. Lance Corporal Andy Moralee’s RECCE platoon is fighting against an evil foe while trying to hold what’s left of their moral and their humanity together. The Militia have captured their boss and Yulia (a former Presidential Guard who has no more stomach for the Guard). Their mission has failed so spectacularly that their military and that of another colonial power are stepping in. However, the RECCE platoon’s troubles are far from over. As they search for their missing comrades across the planet Eden, the book draws the reader into small unit battles and the dreadful necessities of war and the toll it takes on the soldiers’ bodies and minds.

RECCE II The Union Series Book 5 eBook Phillip Richards Reviews
One of top military series that I have read. Exciting and very modern infantry fighting. I am looking forward for the next book. This series deserves more exposure and reviews. This Series is as good as Jack Campbell’s Lost Fleet series or Marko Kloos’s Frontlines series.
It was worth the wait for this book to be finished. This is a very well done series - one of the best that I have read. I'm an old retired guy and my drug of choice is reading. I think that Phillip Richards and Marko Kloos are two of the finest writers currently producing books. There are other good writers, Danny Loomis and Henry V. O'Neil to name two, but Phillip Richards and Marko Kloos consistently produce outstanding books with great care and thought. Thanks guys!
I can't say enough good things about this series. The author captures the mindset of a junior NCO so well it is a bit unnerving. LCpl Moralee is still trapped in the woods on Eden with his severely reduced platoon. The political maneuvering of erstwhile allies continues to threaten the lives of everyone around him. To make matters worse, the brave troopers of Moralee's platoon increasingly depend upon his wits and judgement. The weight of their trust in him threatens to overwhelm our young hero. The guilt he has held at bay, surviving where his friends fell around him, the lives he cut short himself, the people he failed to save, it can't stay buried forever and this mission won't seem to end.
In "Recce II" we learn more about supporting characters and continue to see Andy develop as a leader. The hard choices he is forced to make as well as the orders he hates, but must follow anyway, begin to become easier. We begin to fear that perhaps this mission, Eden in general, may be too much for the trooper's heart to handle. We can only build up so much scar tissue on our souls before we forget who we once were, as well as the version of ourselves we always wanted to become. Andy has seen few of his friends survive his many campaigns, the oldest of them had all reached a point of no return and lost their minds, their lives, or both. Will Moralee find a way to live with his demons long enough to extract his men from the nightmare of Eden's paradise?
Mr. Richards has done it again. Once again he brings forth a great story written in a clear clean way. He has continued to develop the main character in very definitive ways which also show the development of what happens to a person when confronted with the horrors of war.
This is a nicely paced story keeping with the perfect match of action and development for the Union Series as a whole and all characters involved in the story. When I finished the book, I was satisfied with where and how it ended, and left wanting the series to continue.
Mr. Richards congratulations on another awesome book and I look forward to the next one.
I would definitely recommend this book to others.
Book #5 is awesome! This book is so much better than the previous ones in this series for many reasons. The fighting occurs in villages, trenches, warrens, forest, and even on a beach. The platoon has two major tasks in this mission They must locate the surface to orbit missiles and rescue their platoon leader as well as his support team. Andy not only thinks of ways to keep his section members alive, but also thinks outside the so-called box by considering the ramifications of why the platoon is being controlled and
tasked away from it's original mission. Also how the enemy knows where his platoon is at certain key moments. Plenty of action!
A very entertaining book to read. I look forward to future books concerning the life of Andy while in the military.
An incredible set of books, these five were gripping, horrific, and explain so much that us civilians can never grasp. The last in the five, I was expecting the tone and pace to slacken somewhat, but like the first four it was difficult to find a place to put it down. Andy is once again suffering from his actions but managing to continue to operate at some level. He is a character that rivals Jack Reacher and Eve Dallas in interest and involvement with the reader, and I hope Mr. Richards will continue writing books with Andy as the central character, building up a whole world of characters that we can identify with and a universe to revisit as often as possible. Andy is still young after all.
